Open Subdiv or Turbosmooth? Whats the difference?
I was recently asked these questions: “What the difference between turbosmooth and Open Subdiv? Why do we need another sub division surface modifier?”
For obvious reasons I tend to be a little too close to the forest to see all the trees and I can easliy forget that sometimes context is really important to the explanation.
So I thought I’d take these questions (that appeared in 3dsMax forum on Facebook) and put some context around them. Now obviously, every Max user is different and you may be very happy with Turbosmooth. Thats totally OK. But OSD opens up lots of new options for sub-dividing your models.
Either way, it remains true that you can use 3ds Max any way you prefer. There is more than one way to accomplish things in Max. The more choice you have, the more control you have. And thats always a good thing.

One last thing, I don’t know it all. I never have. If you have some great reasons/examples why Turbosmooth and OSD are great additions to your workflow (or why in particluar instances one is better than the other), please share it below. I’m really interested in learning and hearing about how and why people are using 3ds Max and I know other Max users are as well! Please add to the conversation!
Happy Max’ing
